UKRAINE IN CONDITIONS OF CRISIS EXACERBATION OF SOVIET

SYSTEM AND THE USSR DISSOLUTION (1965-1991): HISTORIOGRAPHY

Abstract: Brezhnev's era had a negative impact on the development of historical science in Ukraine. Total russification of Ukraine, imposition of new ideological paradigms, which were covered by the internationalization of society, replaced the partial liberalization of the life, the intensification of the study of Ukrainian history. The attack on «Sixties» began, political repression renewed, especially it concerned the human rights activists and dissidents. Authoritarianism and the party dictatorship were asserted at a rapid pace. The «stagnation period», that led to the systemic crisis of the USSR, of society as a whole, didn’t bypass historical science. Scientists of the Ukrainian diaspora stood up for the traditions of national historiography, found their niche in European and world historical science as historical Ukrainian studies. Between the 1980s and 1990s, a new historiographical situation emerge. It opened up opportunities for the revival of Ukrainian historiography, helped historians redefine their own views, and liberated themselves from the dogmatic layers of the totalitarian era.

Keywords: historical science in Ukraine, historiography of Ukrainian history, historiography, Soviet historians, historians of the Ukrainian diaspora, perestroika era.
