POLITICAL AND LEGAL CONDITIONS OF ECONOMIC

DEVELOPMENT IN VOLYN IN 1387 – 1506 YEARS

Abstract. The article deals with the situation and development of the economy in Volyn, depending on the political and legal decisions of the Lithuanian princes, namely: Prince Vitovt, Svitrigaila Olgerdovich, Casimir IV and Alexander I Jagellon. Therefore, the purpose of the article is to determine the peculiarities of the development of the household of the region during the reign of these Lithuanian princes. The following historical methodology was used during the research: historical–chronological, comparative–historical, descriptive methods, critical analysis and dense description method. Investigated the legal regulation of the economy in the region before the first Lithuanian statute appeared. Consideration of this problem through the lens of political and legal conditions is new to the national historiography. It was determined that the main political vectors of the Grand Duke of Lithuania Vitovt Gediminovich and Svidrigail Olgerdovich were to give empty land to local people to assert personal power in the region and to increase the number of crafts. An important success of Vytautas was the invitation of Karaites to Volhynia to sell local goods outside the residence at fairs and auctions. The coronation of the prince in Lutsk in 1429 contributed to the growth of the food industry. During the time of Svidrigail, a well–established form of land transfer act was created, indicating trades on possessions. Grand Duke of Lithuania Casimir IV adhered to the policy of the principle of "let's not move the old, we do not enter the new" because of the regular attacks of the Tatars on Volyn, which is why the economy of this period in Volyn regressed. The position of Alexander I Jaggellon was different. It was found that in the conditions of the war with the Muscovites, there were favorable conditions for the local population: the granting of Magdeburg rights to cities, the emergence of workshops, exemption from taxes such as volovschina. The Grand Duke of Lithuania Alexander I tried to settle the land issue by issuing the charter of the Volyn Territory in 1501: the transfer, sale and purchase of land. Scientists have come to the conclusion that, depending on personal views on politics, Lithuanian princes changed the situation in the economic sphere in Volyn.
