THE FIGURE OF OSTAFIY DASHKOVYCH IN EUROPEAN
HISTORIOGRAPHY
Abstract. The purpose of the article is to study the development of ideas in European historiography about the life and work of Cherkasy and Kaniv elders Ostafy Dashkovych. Chronological boundaries of the study - XVI-XX centuries. Chronological, comparative and dialectical methods were used in the study. The evolution of research and dissemination of views on Ostafy Dashkovich in European science in different countries and in different periods of its development is considered. Attention is drawn to the dependence of these views on the source base introduced into scientific circulation. It is noted that the main lines of Dashkovych's image in literature are his vision as an organizer of the Ukrainian Cossacks and as a statesman and politician. At the same time, since the 19th century, the position on Ostafy Dashkovych as hetman and organizer of the Cossack army has been criticized. The key role of Polish historiography in creating a scientific image of this elder and further dissemination of relevant information is emphasized. The role of a number of scholars, thanks to whom the corresponding image in historical science was created, is especially noted - Bernard Vapowski, Sigismund Herberstein, Martin and Joachim Bielski, Shimon Starovolski and others. At the same time, from the seventeenth century in historiography there were tendencies to mythologize the life of Ostafy Dashkovich, which persisted in the following centuries.
The conclusions note that the image of Ostafy Dashkovich was quite popular in European historiography (in particular, in French, Romanian, Italian and others) when historians studied the processes related to international and political problems of the early sixteenth century in Eastern Europe. From European historiography, materials about Mr. Ostafy also end up in American historiography. It is also noted that the focus of historians was primarily Dashkovich's military activities, but sometimes his origins and family. At the same time, in most cases it is considered in the context of the history of Poland, and in some cases - in the context of the history of Ukraine.
Key words: European historiography, Polish historiography, Ostafy Dashkovych, Ukrainian Cossacks, historical science.
