SCHOOL EDUCATION OF THE SUMY REGION (1939-2020):
HISTORIOGRAPHY OF THE ISSUE
Abstract. The purpose of the proposed exploration is to identify and analyse the existing publications on the development of school education in Sumy Region in 1939‒2020 as part of the educational field of Ukraine. For this purpose, we have used the method of historiographic analysis and synthesis, which creates an opportunity to critically review the academic heritage of scientists, compare their results and establish the completeness of the study of the topic. The historiography of the problem has been arbitrarily divided into two periods: 1st ‒ Soviet period (1939–1991) and 2nd ‒ Modern Ukrainian period (1991–2020). It has been found that the historiographic findings of the first period have featured an exaggerated magnification of the achievements of the Soviet authorities in the field of education. Some data on the development of education in the Sumy region have been included into a fundamental edition «History of cities and villages of the Ukrainian SSR. Sumy region» (1973). It provides statistics on the number of educational establishments, both generally at a regional level and separately in the regional settlements. The realistic comprehension of the history of schooling in Ukraine began only in the early 90's of the twentieth century in the context of the national revival following the proclamation of the sovereign Ukrainian state. It has also been revealed that the most attention by the modern historians of 1991–2020 has been paid to the challenge of reforming of school education. Most of the works available are systematic, objective although addressing mainly the general Ukrainian context. The overall conclusion is that presently Ukraine lacks works outlining the transformation of the schooling at the regional level. The given analysis of historiographical sources of Ukrainian scientists and scholars of the Ukrainian diaspora testifies the lack of comprehensive studies on the formation and development of school education in the Sumy region in 1939‒2020.
