THE FATE OF ONE UKRAINIAN FAMILY IN THE VORTEX OF

THE GREAT WAR

Abstract. Although there have been many publications to date that were dedicated to various aspects of the World War I, at the same time, there are other little-known questions or which have not been studied at all. The problem of daily challenges, the fate of Ukrainian families in the vortex of the Great War needs to be clarified. Archival sources of this period of two warring empires – Russia and Austro-Hungary need additional search and analysis.

The purpose of the publication is to represent by example of the Voitenko family the fate of millions of Ukrainian families who found themselves in the circle of the World War I. The territory of Ukraine became one of the main theaters of military operations of the Great War, which resulted in a real tragedy for Ukrainian people, who got to the opposite sides of the belligerents, on different sides of the front. Ukrainians were forced to kill each other for the interests of others.

In the introductory and final parts of the local history exploration some of the pages of the Voitenko family tree were represented. Its historical path from the middle of the nineteenth century to the present was observed.

The main biographical information about the Voitenko family from the Voitenky hamlet (later – Krasnozhony) of the Korovinsky volost of Romny district of Poltava province was given.

Through the prism of archival sources, the participation of Voitenko-men in warfares on the fronts of World War I and their captivity are revealed. The information about the military success of Voitenko brothers, their injuries, contusion, awards etc. was given.

Key words: World War I, the Great War, Voitenko family, Voitenky hamlet, infantry regiment, prisoner of war.
