ACTIVITIES OF UKRAINIAN MASS MEDIA ON THE BASIS OF

PROTEST MOVEMENTS AND ACTIONS IN UKRAINE AT THE END OF

THE 20th CENTURY – THE BEGINNING OF THE 21st CENTURY

Abstract. The article examines a number of Ukrainian media in the midst of protest movements and actions at the end of the 20th – the beginning of the 21st century. Based on eyewitness’ accounts and information about these events, the manifestations of the fourth branch of government on the eve and during the "Student Revolution on Granite", the stunt «Ukraine without Kuchma», «Orange Revolution» and the events of the Revolution of Dignity. Protest political movements oblige the researchers to establish patterns of development of the civil movement in order to identify various scenarios of future events. An important role in these processes is played by the participation of the mass media, which have the mission to objectively inform Ukraine and the world about these stunts, without forgetting about journalistic ethics. Therefore, the author argues that the coverage of protests is a powerful resource base for the direct initiators and participants of these events, because it allows protesters to include their demands into the information picture of the day, week, month and a year.

The author mentions that the media space is an effective means of pressure and a factor that can help achieve key goals and fulfill the conditions set by the organizers of the stunt. After all, on the basis of eyewitness’ testimonies and information reports, it is revealed that by their nature any mass media are initially interested in covering the biggest and most resonant events, which often involve violence and influence the political agenda in the country and / or the world.

The study of this issue is important in light of the critical thinking and national consciousness formation with the help of the media, which create a historical and cultural space of information. At the same time, despite the significant contribution of the Ukrainian scientific community to the development of this issue, the problem of media coverage during protest movements and stunts in Ukraine requires more reviews and systematic coverage in research.
