RESEARCH PAPER WRITTEN BY THE I. M. YEREMEIEV AT

MYRONIVKA PLANT BREEDING STATION (1917–1931)


Abstract. In the post-industrial era, the agricultural sector of Ukraine's economy is gaining importance all over again. That is exactly the reason for emerging interest in previous research in the field of agriculture, which once gave impetus to economic development. One of the prominent figures in agronomic science in the twentieth century was a researcher, scientist and teacher Ivan Maksymovych Yeremeiev.

The purpose of the Article is to provide a scientific analysis of the scientist’s research work during the period of his work at Myronivka Plant Breeding and Research Station, to analyze the history of breeding winter wheat variety “Ukrainka 0246”, as well as his contribution to the development of breeding business. The methodological basis of the publication consisted of general logical methods (analysis, comparison, synthesis, generalization, biographical) and general historical (historical-chronological, historical-genetic, historical-comparative, historical-systemic) methods.

The paper analyzes the research work of I.M. Yeremeiev on the selection of winter wheat, his practical research and the latest ideas of variety seed selection, which allowed him to derive a unique variety. The main features of “Ukrainka 0246” are being revealed, such as high yield, excellent grain quality, frost resistance, drought resistance and excellent baking properties. I.M. Yeremiev has demonstrated outstanding organizational skills when spreading a new variety, hence the crops occupied large areas both in Ukraine and abroad. By the end of the 1940s, more than 7 million hectares was sown with new wheat variety, and wheat exports became an important item in the Soviet economy and trade. In addition, in 1945, the United Nations approved “Ukrainka” variety as an international standard for strong wheat.

The publication focuses on the scientist's innovative approaches to the study of plant breeding and hybridization, the contribution to agricultural science development. Certain aspects for further study of this topic are outlined, in particular research work on sugar beet and oat breeding.
