UKRAINIAN STUDIES OF PROFESSOR YURII SOROKA
Relevance and purpose of the article. Despite the number of publications about the life and work of Prof. Yurii Soroka, his contribution to the development of Ukrainian studies has not yet been investigated separately. Although in view of the increase in public demand for the synthesis of knowledge about Ukraine in the conditions of Russia’s occupation and genocidal war against Ukraine, it has increased more than ever. This especially applies to the history of wars, national liberation struggles for independence, cathedral unity and statehood of Ukraine. The research methodology is based on the general principles of historiographical personalism, taking into account the works of predecessors, consistent adherence to the principles of scientificity, historicism, continuity, anthropological and critical-analytical approaches, the involvement of methods of historiographical analysis and synthesis, Ukrainian comparative studies, and my own views as a scientific consultant to Yurii Soroka’s doctoral project. The presentation of the material covers three meaningful aspects: a) periodization of the scientist’s scientific path, his methodological reorientation after the restoration of Ukraine’s independence; b) the place, content and scientific significance of the historian’s studies of Ukrainian studies, their connection with archival studies and local studies; c) the research laboratory and the researcher’s storytelling style. The formation of the worldview foundations of the scientist and teacher, his assimilation of the methodology of Ukrainian studies, the methodology of historical synthesis and interdisciplinary research are highlighted, the importance of his works for enriching knowledge of the history of Ukrainian statehood is shown, the contribution of the scientist to the study of ethnopolitical and demographic changes in the structure of the Western Ukrainian population in the period 1939–1950 is highlighted. , the Ukrainian studies context of regional studies is revealed. A warning was expressed about the need for a critical attitude to the publications of the scientist of the Soviet era.
Conclusions and proposals. The study of the Ukrainian studies heritage of Professor Yurii Soroka is part of a broader scientific problem - the creation of a thorough intellectual biography in the context of the intellectual history of Shevchenko University and the methodological breakthrough in Ukrainian historiography of the era of Ukraine’s independence. It is important to continue the further research of the transformation of the historian’s creative laboratory, the peculiarities, the process of his worldview reorientation based on the understanding of the national idea, the methodology of Ukrainian studies and the civilizational values of the Ukrainian people.
