BIOGRAPHICAL DISCOURSE IN THE ROMANTIC TRADITION
OF UKRAINIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY
The purpose of the publication is to study biographical discourse in the tradition of Ukrainian historiography through the optics of the markers of the Romantic period, which define «elusiveness», «variability» and «kaleidoscopicity». Based on the scientific and creative heritage of two significant representatives of Ukrainian historiography of the Romantic period, Mykola Kostomarov and Danylo Mordovets, the author analyzes and outlines its most expressive and visible features that form a certain biographical canon of the Romantic narrative. The methodology is based on systematic adherence to the principles of historicism, continuity, objectivity, the use of analytical approaches and techniques of biography, methods of historiographical analysis and criticism, comparative studies in comparison with the peculiarities of the historical and cultural tradition and the challenges of the epoch. General scientific and historical research methods were also used: problematic-chronological, comparative-historical, scientific heuristics, etc. The scientific novelty lies in the expansion and deepening of the format of defining/evaluating the phenomenon of the biographical canon based on the analysis and comparison of the works of M. Kostomarov and D. Mordovets. Despite the existence of numerous studies on the biographical narratives of both iconic figures, this is the first time that the study has been conducted in the context of the worldview of these romantics who coincided in time. Conclusions. It has been found that biographical discourse was an important element of Romantic historiography, the tradition of which created a certain biographical canon.
Despite its relative conventionality and mobility, it was possible to establish that it was a complex and multifaceted model with many elements, the key ones being the discourse of private life, the actualization of the gender factor in biographical reconstructions, and psychological portraits of the characters in the interior of their characters.
Key words: Mykola Kostomarov, Danylo Mordovets, romanticism, Ukrainian historiography, narrative, biographical discourse, biographical canon.
