PANTELEIMON KULISH AND CHERKASSY
The article examines the issue of the stay and activities of Panteleimon Kulish in the 1840-50s in the city of Cherkassy. All this is connected with the development of archival work in Kyiv, the creation of the Temporary Commission for the review of ancient acts and the personal desire of the researcher to find new sources for the history of Ukraine and use them in his scientific work, in particular, when writing general studies. It is claimed that Panteleimon Kulish visited Cherkassy at least twice (in 1843 and 1856), but possibly even three times (in 1844). In the city, in particular, he discovered some documentary sources and recorded oral testimonies among the city's residents. Of particular importance among the sources discovered by him are the charter of the Polish king Sigismund August regarding the granting of the Magdeburg right to the city of Cherkassy and the oral memories of the old residents about the historical past. It is emphasized that the information made public by P. Kulish in his «Notes» of 1856 is confirmed in many historical documents known today, in particular in metric books, etc. In addition, it is noted that Panteleimon Kulish became the first researcher of the history of the city of Cherkasy. His pen is the first essay in the history of the city, published in «Kiev Provincial Gazette» in 1846. However, this essay remained virtually unknown to both subsequent generations of historians and researchers of Panteleimon Kulish's work. The author's critical approach to historical sources and views expressed by other historians deserves special attention in this matter. It is important that he draws attention to the versions of the origin of the city of Cherkassy and refutes existing ideas about it. In the end, the opinion is expressed about the need for a more detailed study of information and analysis of sources related to the publication by the historian of the information related to the history of the city of Cherkassy. Methodological research is based on the application of a combination of dialectical and logical methods, the application of the comparative method.
Key words: Panteleimon Kulish, Cherkassy, historical sources, history of Ukraine, history of the city.
