FEATURES OF FISHING IN UKRAINE IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 20TH – EARLY 21ST CENTURIES (A CASE STUDY OF POROSSYA)
The purpose of this publication is to analyze the features of fishing in the Porossia region during the second half of the XX – early XXI centuries. To achieve this goal, the following objectives were set: to study fishing gear and methods of amateur fishing; to identify the influence of historical, technological, legal, and environmental changes on the development of fishing; to trace cultural survivals, beliefs, and superstitions associated with fishing. The methodology is based on the principles of historicism, systematicity, and scientific approach. The research method is structured around the use of field ethnographic data; ethnological and historical-legal analysis of written sources, particularly scholarly works and legislative acts from the 20th and early 21st centuries; and historical-comparative analysis. The study utilizes S. Sirenko's classification of fishing gear. The scientific novelty lies in the actualization of knowledge about Ukrainian fishing, particularly in revealing: the transformation of traditional gear due to technical progress and the use of modern materials; the regional specificity and existence of certain implements and fishing methods; and the documentation of fishing survivals. Additionally, some traditional fishing methods are examined within an ecological and legal context. The object of this research is fishing in the historical and ethnographic subregion of Porossia, which belongs to the Middle Dnipro region. The Porossia territory covers the basin of the Ros River—a left tributary of the Dnipro. According to the current administrative division, Porossia is located at the junction of the southern districts of Kyiv, the northern districts of Cherkasy Oblast, and the eastern districts of Vinnytsia Oblast. The collection of ethnographic materials for this study was conducted within the modern Cherkasy and Zvenyhorodka districts of Cherkasy Oblast.
