TITLE LABOR MIGRATION FROM GALICIA AT THE TURN OF THE19TH-20TH CENTURIES: TSOURCES AND SOCIAL CONTRADICTIONS
The purpose of the article is to highlight the main sources that characterize the process of mass labor migration from Galicia at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries and its consequences for systemic changes in the demographic, cultural, and identity structures of the Western Ukrainian lands. Particular attention is paid to the analysis of sources and narratives that reflected this phenomenon in public opinion, journalism, spiritual discourse, and scholarly reflection of the contemporary Ukrainian elite. The article examines the works of Ukrainian scholars and public figures such as V. Hnatiuk, I. Franko, A. Sheptytsky, Y. Oleskiv, and N. Dmytriev. Publications in periodicals, including Notes of the Shevchenko Scientific Society and the newspaper Dilo, are analyzed. These publications represent the first contributions to the study of immigrant folklore and the folk culture of Ukrainians, serving as primary material for the course Historical and Cultural Heritage of the Ukrainian Diaspora for students of history faculties. The relevance of the study is determined by parallels with the current migration situation in Ukraine, which gives historical experience particular value in the context of searching for models of preserving national identity in forced diaspora.
