V. ICONNIKOV AND THE TRADITION OF AWARDING STUDENT WORKS WITH MEDALS

AT ST. VLADIMIR UNIVERSITY

The purpose of the study is to analyse student research papers awarded with medals and prepared under the supervision of Professor V. Ikonnikov of St. Vladimir's University. The article is based on an integrated approach that includes the study of primary sources, namely, the competitive works of applicants. Analytical, descriptive, comparative and historical research methods and the method of historiographical analysis are used. The relevance of the work is due to the introduction of a number of unpublished archival sources, which made it possible to determine the scientific level of student medal works and to find out the degree of influence of the supervisor on the views of his students.

It is determined that V. Ikonnikov constantly attracted talented young people to scientific work by preparing abstracts and discussing them in seminars and offering to write competitive papers at the faculty. The tradition of rewarding the best student research was established immediately after the opening of the university and has been going on for over 80 years. In his student years, V. Ikonnikov prepared a paper entitled «Maximus the Greek», for which he received a gold award.

The professor focused his students' attention on the study of primary sources on Russian history. Only one essay deviates from the source study topic, dedicated to the foreign policy of Empress Elizabeth Petrovna. It is proved that the competition papers are written according to the same structure proposed by the supervisor. It is worth noting the high scientific level of student research, as some of them have not lost their relevance today. The winners of gold and silver awards later built successful scientific and pedagogical (A. Yasynskyi, I. Kozlovskyi) and pedagogical (M. Liatoshynskyi, K. Kalabanovskyi, M. Stelmashenko) careers.

Key words: St Volodymyr's University, student, competition, medal works, supervisor.
